A Brief History

The festival's name may be puzzling, but it has a historical origin. As early as 1155, evidence suggests that there was a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Michael on top of a hill in present-day Bad Dürkheim. Over time, the hill became a popular place for pilgrims, who were attracted to the sanctuary on St. Michael's day, which falls on September 29th. Local farmers and wine growers also started going to the hill to seek customers and profit. They would sell enticing treats such as wine, sausages, and bread. This event continued as the Michaelismarkt for centuries until its name changed to Wurstmarkt in 1832, supposedly due to the popularity of sausages consumed at the festival.

The Wine Aspect

While sausages may have given this festival its name, it is truly a celebration of local vineyards and wine. The most common drink at the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt is Weinschorle, a mix of wine and sparkling water. These are customarily served in unique drinking vessels known as Adobe glasses, which have indented dots for a firmer grip. Riesling is the main wine of the region, so it is a common choice at the festival, along with rose, red, and sparkling wines.

A Unique Experience

In addition to indulging in wine, visitors can enjoy a full program of events throughout the festival, including fireworks, the crowning of a new wine princess, and the "little chef clue shopping," where attendees gather in the morning to listen to songs and poetry in the local dialect while sipping on morning wine.
