Discovering Heidelberg: A Journey Through History and Beauty
Welcome to a new adventure with Mundo Por Descubrir! Today, we find ourselves in Heidelberg, Germany, where winter seems to have made a surprising comeback in the middle of August. Despite the chilly weather, Heidelberg has plenty to offer, especially during the summer months. Let's explore some of the key highlights of this enchanting city.
An Impressive Castle and Magnificent Views
Alex and his fellow travelers make their way up to the famous Heidelberg Castle, perched atop a hill. Instead of climbing on foot, they opt for the convenient funicular railway that takes them straight to the entrance. The €7 ticket includes a round trip, making it a great option for those looking to conserve their energy.
The castle itself is a combination of different architectural styles and additions from various time periods. Construction on the castle began in the early medieval ages, and over the years, different structures and wings were added. Some parts of the castle are beautifully preserved, while others show signs of decay. Nonetheless, the visit is captivating and offers stunning panoramic views of the city.

The Fascinating Pharmacy Museum
Within the castle grounds, there is a museum dedicated to the history of pharmacy. With more than 20,000 artifacts on display, travelers can immerse themselves in the world of ancient pharmacy practices and the lives of historical apothecaries. The museum features beautifully recreated pharmacy interiors and a remarkable collection of medical tools and curiosities. There is even a section dedicated to demonstrating the preparation of medicines and remedies from centuries past.
The Guinness World Record Wine Barrel
Heidelberg is also home to the largest wine barrel in the world, a fact that astonishes Alex and his companions. This enormous barrel can hold over 200,000 liters of wine, equivalent to more than 5,000 standard wine bottles. The barrel was built to store the excess wine produced by local vineyards. Although it is no longer used for wine storage, it serves as a popular tourist attraction.
Exploring the Old Bridge and its Surroundings
After their visit to the castle, Alex and the other travelers head to Heidelberg's Old Bridge, known as the "Alte Brücke." This historic bridge offers breathtaking views of the city, the river, and, of course, the castle. Dating back to the 18th century, the bridge is adorned with sculptures, including a famous monkey sculpture that is said to bring good luck. Although the original monkey statue had been damaged, a replica was installed in the 1970s.

Don't Miss the Old Town
Before concluding their day in Heidelberg, the Mundo Por Descubrir team recommends dedicating some time to explore the city's charming Old Town. With its picturesque main square and impressive city gate, the Old Town provides a glimpse into Heidelberg's rich history. The narrow streets, colorful buildings, and cozy cafes create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

From its fascinating museums and world record attractions to its captivating landscapes and enchanting Old Town, this city has something for every traveler.
